Server-based Thin client computing from PC&L |
What is a Winterm thin client?
WintermTM thin clients are devices that provide complete, enterprise-wide
access to 16- and 32-bit Windows®-, JavaTM-, browser-, and legacy applications with a
user-friendly graphical interface. With these Wyse® solutions, applications run on the
server, not the client, allowing for centralized management, enhanced security, and
exceptional, cost-effective performance. Winterm thin clients also feature built-in
terminal emulation capabilities, providing direct access to a wide variety of host-based,
legacy computing environments. Combined, these features deliver Windows NT® and legacy
functionality from the user's desktop terminal while reducing an enterprise's total cost
of ownership.
How does it work?
The key to Winterm thin clients is their unique ability to separate an application's
interface from its execution. During a computing session, only mouse clicks, keystrokes,
and screen updates travel the network. All processing occurs on the server. So Winterm
devices require only one-tenth the bandwidth of a conventional client/server network.
The interface between a Windows terminal and its server is typically enabled by Citrix®
WinFrame® server software and its ICA® (Independent Computing Architecture) protocol.
ICA provides universal access across any type of network to the full Windows NT operating
system environment through the use of standard network connecting options such as async,
modem, Ethernet, ISDN, Frame Relay, and ATM. Endorsed by Microsoft, ICA is rapidly
becoming the de facto industry-standard protocol for thin-client/server computing.
Why use Wyse Winterm thin clients?
Winterm thin clients are the best solution for growing enterprises because they are
smarter, easier, and thinner than other thin-client options on the market today.
Smarter, because we offer choices. IT professionals can choose the device that best fits
the user's application needs--Windows-, Java-, browser-, or host-based applications, or
all in one. And because we offer more options for more work environments. There are
products that are slim and modular for locations where space is at a premium. Streamlined
and flat devices where aesthetics and functionality are key. Emission-free models for
sensitive locations. Integrated units for ease of installation and maintenance with high
security. And even wireless, mobile units where on-the-go computing is a must.
Winterm thin clients are easier. All of our products are plug-and-play-ready with built-in
terminal emulation and a wide variety of connectivity options to fit almost any enterprise
network.
And by utilizing the latest in centralized computing technologies--where 100 percent of
the applications and data reside and execute on the server--the Wyse approach is thinner.
Users get universal access to business-critical applications without any sacrifice of
application performance. IT professionals can deploy and manage applications from a single
location, and enterprise application security is actually improved. Together, these
benefits are what "thin" is all about--reducing the total cost of computing and
solving desktop 2000 needs.
